Fat Therapists Monthly Group

for rest, reflection, connection

The Fat Therapists Monthly Group is a space for fat therapists to slow down together. We open with an invitation to check in with your body and the space around you, breathe, and arrive however you're arriving that day. There's no expectation to participate in any particular way; it's always an invitation, never a requirement.

From there, we orient to the space we're creating, make introductions, and open the floor for anyone bringing something to explore or discuss. We move into facilitated reflection and conversation, and close with a poem or creative prompt and a few quiet minutes of art-making before we say goodbye.

This is a place to bring what's alive in your practice and your body, alongside others who share a commitment to fat liberation, embodiment, and care with room for complexity, joy, tenderness, and laughter. Each meeting is an invitation to show up as you are: therapist, human, whole.

Right now anti-fat bias is particularly loud - understandably as it’s intertwined with white supremacy and other oppressive systems. This group is a consistent and reliably weight inclusive and fat affirming space. And being in fat community can be joyful, nourishing, a relief, protective, and centering — allowing us also to access curiosity, questions, and learning in service of our clients. And we are more than therapists and to continue showing up in this work, we need to tend to all our parts. This group creates facilitated space for embodiment, creativity, and joy in addition to reflective, peer consultation.

I'm Laurie Gutierrez Ganberg, a white, queer, fat, neurodivergent, nonbinary therapist, supervisor, educator, and community builder deeply committed to anti-oppression, fat liberation, and disability justice, both personally and professionally. I’ve loved facilitating groups over the last 13 years. I hold space for reflection, mutual support, and accountability — as we examine the systems that shape our work and ourselves. I’m so grateful for the places I’ve been in fat community so I support local fat community where I can: sponsoring the Fat Con in Seattle in 2025 and 2026 and local Fat Swims. I hope you’re able to join me in The Fat Therapists Community.
